Desktop Shortcuts to Network Storage

On each IAC faculty/staff Windows computer, automatically-created shortcuts provide easy access to various network locations.

For example, a user named 'iac-testuser' in the School of Public Policy would see 3 shortcuts:
Desktop Shortcuts

  • Network Drive iac-testuser provides storage for the user's individual documents; access is allowed only for that user
  • Network Drive pubp-common is for shared material within Public Policy; other schools or units have their own shares for departmentally-shared content. All material stored in departmental common folders is by default accessible by all employees in the department, though tighter restrictions can be arranged for subfolders by request.
  • Network Drive iac-common is for shared material within Ivan Allen College. All material stored here is by default readable by all employees in the college, though tighter restrictions can be arranged for subfolders by request; for example, if an inter-school research group needs to store material only viewable by members of the group.

When saving work from typical applications, these shortcuts can be used for easy access to network storage. For example, from Microsoft Word's 'Save' dialog box, one can navigate to the Desktop, where the three shortcuts are visible:

Double-clicking 'Network Drive iac-testuser', for example, allows navigation to the network location:
