Website Hosting

There are several options for web hosting, depending on the kind of site you need to create and the capabilities you need.  The Ivan Allen College's Web Developer's Office will assist units of the college in hosting their unit websites.  For other kinds of websites, there are a variety of options:

  1. Sites @ Georgia Tech is an ideal solution for faculty members' individual professional websites.  It is a multi-site WordPress server, giving you the familiar interface of WordPress without any of the administration hassles.

  2. OIT provides a robust web hosting service, similar to what you'd get from a commercial web hosting provider.  The Ivan Allen College (IAC) uses this for most college/school sites, and it can also be used for research groups or even individual faculty member sites.  One of the advantages of the service is the Plesk control panel system, which allows installation of common web applications with just a few clicks; it also allows you to control mySQL databases very easily.

  3. The School of Literature, Media, and Communication (LMC) provides separate web hosting for faculty and students, in part to assist students with their creative and development work and with learning various kinds of multimedia programming.  Open an IT support request to request space or more information.

  4. In many cases, we can offer specialized hosting for needs that cannot be addressed through the above services, e.g., specialized web applications.  Please contact the IAC Web Developer's Office for more information.

Domain Names

You can generally select a domain name for a site of the form "something.school.gatech.edu", such as euce.inta.gatech.edu or gburdell.spp.gatech.edu .  Outside domain names (ones not ending with ".gatech.edu") are no longer allowed, and top-level domain names (i.e. "something.gatech.edu") are only permitted for special high-level or multi-college projects.
